Whether you’re a film buff looking for a classic repertoire of films, or a casual movie-goer looking to see the latest Hollywood blockbuster, Oaxaca has something for you! With many talleres and public spaces showing films, there’s always a way to spend a night at the movies!
If you’re in the mood for air conditioning and squashy theatre seats, you can head on over to the Cinemex or Cinepolis! At these cinemas, there is a fair selection of Mexican and international films. In fact, for the month of September and October, there is a French film festival at the Cinepolis called “18 tours de cine francés”, showing movies from France as well as short films from other parts of the world. If you want to stay in the city center, and crave a more intimate setting, there are many opportunities to see films in public spaces such as the Biblioteca Infantil and Café Central.
The Oaxaca Cine festival offers an opportunity to see films from all over the world. It’s also a chance see inside one of the most beautiful buildings in Oaxaca (in my opinion!). For 40 to 50 pesos, you can sit down in the Teatro Macedonia Alcala (corner of calles Independencia and Reforma) and watch a film. Films are either in Spanish or sub-titled in Spanish. I suggest going to see a Mexican film and staying for the Q&A with the film-maker at the end!
From October 4 to 11, we invite you to join us for the 2014 Oaxaca Film Fest, an international festival featuring shorts, animation and full-length features from all over the world! With films playing all throughout the day, in nine different venues, the entire city will become a cinema! All screenings are free and open to the public, with the exception of Foundation Nights and screenings at the Cinepolis. To see the schedule, visit http://www.oaxacafilmfest.com!
For the second year, En Vía has been chosen as one of the organizations of honour at the festival’s Foundation Night! Half of the proceeds for tickets sold will be going towards EnVia, to support our program of interest-free loans and education. Join the En Via team on Tuesday, October 7 at the Teatro Juarez for a showing of “No sé si cortarme las venas o dejármelas largas”, followed up with a Q&A by the cast, including the lead actress Zoria Vega who is a great supporter of EnVia!
